What Is a Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a therapeutic technique involving the insertion of fine needles into the skin and underlying muscles. This method specifically targets muscular trigger points, which are irritable, palpable nodules within the muscles.

Benefits of Dry Needling:

  • Increase range of motion

  • Decrease muscle tone

  • Alleviate pain in musculoskeletal conditions

How does it work?

The treatment can trigger a “local twitch response,” which is an involuntary contraction of the affected muscles. This response can lead to changes in muscle length and tension. Additionally, dry needling can enhance blood flow to the targeted muscles and elicit central nervous system responses that reduce pain sensitivity.

FAQ about Dry Needling

Does it Hurt?

Dry needling feels very different from getting a vaccine or having blood taken. The needles used are extremely fine, and most people feel only a small pinch as the needle enters the skin. You might also experience a local muscle twitch, which can feel a little uncomfortable but is completely normal—and often a good sign that the right area is being targeted! Some people embrace the “no pain, no gain” mindset, but rest assured, any discomfort is usually brief.

Will I bleed?

Occasionally, yes—but only very slightly. Sometimes a tiny drop of blood may appear when the needle is removed, similar to what you'd see if you picked a spot (sorry for the image, but it helps put things in perspective!). There's never any significant bleeding, and it’s nothing to worry about.
